Fibre optics cables, transfer data in the form of light, allowing it to travel significantly faster than those used in traditional network cables, which use electrical voltage to transmit data.
Fibre optic cables are made of glass surrounded by a protective sleeve. Their minimum speed is still a match for most copper cables. The minimum speed of fibre optic cabling is 1 Gbps, with maximum speeds exceeding 40 Gbps; that’s 40 billion bits per second.

Which Fibre Optic Cabling System Is Right for You?
We understand that for many, the different types of fibre optic cabling can be confusing. Many IT managers and small-to-medium-sized companies often ask, “what fibre optic cabling is right for me?”. As a structured cabling and fibre optic cabling installation provider, we provide a wide range of networking cabling solutions for businesses throughout the United Kingdom. Red Rock Communications can provide the following fibre optic installation services
Multi-mode Fibre Optic Installers
Multi-mode fibre is the workhorse of most internal fibre networks in the UK. Just like Cat 5E and Cat 6 copper cable is to structured cabling, multi-mode fibre provides a great balance of speed and cost-effectiveness, and really can do it all.
OM3
Providing speeds of up to 10 Gbits over distance of 300m, OM3 is the Cat 5E of the fibre world. Slowly being phased out for OM4 and OM5, OM3 fibre is still a great option when cost balance is key.
OM4
Similar to the step up from Cat 5E to Cat 6, OM4 fibre offers similar top end speeds but over longer distances and with more bandwidth. OM4 is now the default standard for all new builds and is the sweet spot for many businesses wanting very fast speeds but with a good balance when it comes to cost.
OM5
Again we are just stepping up the distances and bandwidth from OM4. Especially as you get towards 40 Gbits over longer distances then OM5 can be the right choice for your business. If you want to future-proof and pay that bit more then OM5 is the fibre cable you should be considering.
Single-mode Fibre Optic Installers
Single-mode fibre cables are used in more specific scenarios or when very long distances are involved. If you have a large, multi-building site and the distances between buildings or structures are exceeding hundreds of metres then single-mode fibre can be the solution you require. However, the disadvantage of this type of cable is the cost and equipment, as single-mode fibre requires much tighter tolerances and material costs, in addition to higher equipment costs.
OS1
Being able to support speeds of up to 10 Gbits over 2,000 metres (2 kilometres), OS1 single-mode fibre can be used indoors and outdoors and is much cheaper than OS2 fibre.
OS2
Stepping up from OS1 to OS2 fibre, the maximum speed stays at 10 Gbits but the distance increases to a maximum of 10,000 metres (10 kilometres). OS2 is mainly used outdoors and is designed and constructed to survive the tough conditions that being permanently exposed to the elements can inflict.
If you need to maintain high-speed connections over very long distances, single-mode fibre is your best option. Otherwise stick with multi-mode fibre.
Ever wondered what the main difference is between single-mode and multi-mode fibres? It is quite simple, single-mode fibre can send a signal or light in only one direction at a time, whereas multi-mode fibre can send and receive a signal simultaneously.
Fibre Optic Cabling Termination and Testing
When it comes to termination of the fibre, we can offer terminations to suit any requirement, from LC to SC to ST, thanks to our fusion splicer. Additionally, given our specialist equipment, all terminations carried out by Red Rock are of the highest quality and suffer from very low signal loss. As part of the termination process, we also test all fibres using a fibre tester which saves all results. These can then be emailed as a PDF document for future reference and to aid in any faults. We can also carry out repairs to existing fibre optic cables quickly and efficiently and get you back up and running in a fraction of the time required to re-install a new fibre optic link.
